I took a class once on Edo society in which all we did was read translations of court case documents. There were two temples that, if a married woman made it through their gates, she would be given sanctuary. If she remained there as a nun for 2 (maybe it was 3) years, then she would have the right to divorce her husband. (John Henry Wigmore, Law and Justice in Tokugawa Japan)

It really bothers me that people will buy the book thinking they're getting something new. The same publisher released a book, in August 2008, which was supposed to be Edmond de Goncourt's 'Utamaro'. I bought a copy of that because I have the original French edition of 1891 and thought it would be interesting to read it in English. That turned out to be a book 'based on' de Goncourt's book... not a translation of it. Many parts of it had been altered, and other parts added in... who knows who wrote those extra parts?! They seem to make a habit of this.
People are going to read the Amsden book, think the info about Utamaro is current, and it will set everything back a hundred years. It really does vex me.

Reading this post reminds me of "Memoirs of Geisha". Adore the book but not so much the movie tho. In fact, I made a trip to Kyoto right after reading the book just to be Maiko for a day :)

The Kunisada print makes me think of Sakuran (my copy arrive a couple of days ago). All that bright colour. Such a strong indication of the changing tastes of the Edo public between the time when Utamaro worked and that when Kunisada's Modern Genji was produced. That incredibly bright and decorative carpet... such a sharp contrast to the Utamaro design. It's more the differences than the similarities that interest me, if you see what I mean.

Astounding isn't it, that kuchi-e have been so overlooked. I love them... the delicate designs, the colours... they have so much character. Of course, the subjects depicted are not generally courtesans... perhaps that's one of the reasons for their being passed over.
